Snoopy is a 2 year old pure bred American Pit Bull Terrier, he has been here at SFABBR since he as about 4-6 weeks old. Snoopy and his brother were abandoned at a local church. Snoopy is neutered, up-to-date on all his vaccines, micro chipped, heart worm negative. Snoopy is crate trained, potty trained, walks well on a leash, his house manners are still a lot to be desired.......he is a thief; he will steal anything if he can. He also likes to chew things, so he must have a lot of toys to chew on.....when he takes something he isn't supposed to we just take it away and replace it with an appropriate toy. Snoopy LOVES other dogs! He is okay ... (Read More)with horses and cats as well. He is okay with children, he just has to be watched because he still hasn't realized his size and might knock over a small child. Snoopy won 'Best in Black' in the AADR's VA Dan River Club's Spring 2013 show! What does that mean exactly? He was the best representation of the breed in the 'Best in Black' category. Because he has been with us a long time his pictures range from puppyhood to adulthood. Snoppy's adoption fee is $200. (Less)

Animal ID: 4Little Miss Leah (female)

Pit Bull Mix    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Dogs, Good w/ Most Cats, Good w/ Kids and Adults
Personality: High Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Leah is a sweet pit mix who was born in November 2010. Leah was rescued by our President, Mackinzie 30 minutes before she would have been euthanized in a gas chamber in York, SC. Did I mention it was Christmas Eve!? Yup, most shelters 'clear kennels' for the holidays so that the staff can take a vacation. Because we have had Leah since she was about 6 weeks old her pictures will range in age. Leah matured to about 25-30lbs, depending on the time of year. Leah is spayed, heart worm negative, micro chipped, up to date on all her vaccines. Leah likes other dogs, cats and children. Her current foster home has several pit bulls, a few cats and a ... (Read More)young toddler. Leah is crate trained (will come with her metal crate), potty trained, walks well on a leash with a harness (due to her huge neck she can slip out of a collar) and loves to play with dogs. Leah's furever home must have another dog that will play with her; she has spent her whole life with other dogs. We had someone try to foster her once that didn't have any dogs and she developed separation anxiety. Once moved into a foster home with other dogs, her separation anxiety disappeared. Her adoption fee is $150. (Less)

Animal ID: 3Jayda (female)

Boxer Mix    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Jayda is a boxer/pit mix that was born around November 2009. We rescued Jayda in January 2011 when we went to rescue some boxer puppies from a rural Rutherford County, NC. It was cold and snowy that day, when I arrived at the home I noticed a momma Boxer and her 3 puppies sleeping in the snow. I loaded the puppies into the Blazer, I begged the owner to let me take the momma because they were still nursing. However he wouldn't let me take her, so feeling horrible and defeated I got back into the Blazer to leave. Then all of a sudden came this little brown dog running out the woods howling at me. As if she were saying 'don't leave me ... (Read More)here'....to paint the picture better; the owner contacted me 4 days prior with a litter of 10 boxer puppies that he couldn't take care of. When I arrived they were outside, it was 20* out and snowing hard; not a dog house, blanket, towel, dog bowl, food or water in site. There were serveral puppies that were trailed into the woods that were half eaten by a 'wild animal' and he didn't even care to bury their little bodies, just left them there! Anyway, he told me to take Jayda she came from the same momma dog and was born the year before. She had puppies in November, which the owner gave away as Christmas gifts. Jayda's teets were still full of milk, I loaded her in the back of the Blazer with the puppies. I got about a mile down the road and I heard them suckling on her. She went on to nurse these puppies for another 2 weeks before she weaned them! Jayda is a super sweet dog! She likes most other dogs and children. She is pretty laid back, but at the same hand if a dog threatens her she will not back down. We have never had her around cats, so we aren't sure. She is all about her humans though and would do excellent in a single dog home. She loves to lay on the couch or in bed with you and cuddle. She is house trained, crate trained and walks well on a leash. She is spayed, micro chipped, heart worm negative and up to date on all her vaccines. Please give Jayda the home she deserves. She has been with us almost 3 years and she has never had her own home. She is very protective of her humans and her home, she can hear someone coming from a few miles off. Her adoption fee is $100. Animal ID: 1Diamond in a Ruff (female)

Pit Bull    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Needs to be Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Diamond in a Ruff, call name Diamond was rescued when we got a call about Pretty Boy. We were told that a dog was left behind when a tenant skipped out on a landlord. The landlord had been feeding the dog for several weeks in hopes they tenant would come back for him. With temperatures dropping below freezing the landlord was desperate for help and contacted us. We arrived at the home prepared to rescue one dog, little did we know we would be rescuing 2 dogs that night. We pulled in the driveway and immediately this pretty little pittie stuck her head out of the bars on the porch snarling at us. We were invading her home and she didn't like ... (Read More)it! So we proceeded up to the porch to try to get this extremely scared pit bull. The landlord yelled at us to meet her in the back yard, we looked at each and thought to ourselves 'shit they don't know she is here' and no they didn't have any idea. Diamond had been on the porch 2-3 weeks without any food or water! There were dozens of barking dogs all around, the landlord thought the noise was dogs from next door as Diamond never was brave enough to make her presence known before. After an hour our VP Andy gave up on her, she was terrified and just kept cowarding and snarling at him. He couldn't get within 6 feet of her. So we switched spots and he went and was working on getting Pretty Boy to trust us while I worked on Diamond. After about 2 hours and a half a pound of hot dogs I was finally able to loop her with a leash. She just melted when the leash went around her neck, she knew she was safe. She hasn't snarled at us since she left that porch! She was very scared for awhile, but she is getting better and better every day. She isn't ready for adoption yet as she still has some rehabilitation and socialization to work on. But we rescued her just in time, 6 days after rescue she went in heat! Diamond has since gained all her weight back! She was about 15lbs under weight. Her fur is starting to come back in, she had multiple bald patches all over from her flea infestation and starvation. Her collar was embedded in her neck and left behind major sores, you can see it in most pictures below her chin. Her sores are almost all healed up now, but she still won't let us put anyting around her neck. And she may never be okay with wearing a collar again. She does well with the harness and head halter. We are very happy that she too is heart worm negative! She is up to date on all her vaccines now and will be spayed as soon as she is done with her heat cycle. She will also be micro chipped before adoption. She is crate trained and potty trained. She does well with Pretty Boy but not other dogs, we are working on her socialization skills. She has no idea how to appropriately interact with dogs. Diamond appears to have had several litters already, but she won't have another. She is estimated to be about 2 years old by the Vets. Her adoption fee will be $200 when she is ready, we are thinking sometime after the holidays. (Less)
